What Online Success Looks Like

The image below shows the number of NEW CUSTOMERS acquired by a SaaS company from Google.

This SaaS company tripled their monthly new customers the quarter after starting SEO campaigns. It only took two quarters to double that new number again...

Why I'm So SEO Obsessed

It didn't take long to double that again!

After two years of SEO, this SaaS company went from dozens of customers per quarter to hundreds per month.

Imagine struggling for years to pull in more than 30 new customers per month. Then you start focusing on some simple SEO content tactics, and 6 months later you have 60 new people coming in and giving you money? Without any ad dollars required??

Even while other expensive marketing tactics consistently underperformed, that business transformed and took off with SEO.

The experience made me a forever believer in SEO and content marketing. But it wasn't all wins all the time. Here's what it took.

The Start is Always Toughest

Notice there is no improvement in Q2 even though we started SEO work in May.

That's because even if you do everything perfect, it still takes time for search engines discover your changes and give you credit for them.

The first SEO sprint involved publishing dozens of new service pages targeting customers searching for a service by country. It took us a week to finalize a page template. It took another week to build 30 pages with that template. These pages pulled in a small amount of traffic the following week, but traffic increased every week for two months.

So we had the right idea and we executed the whole sprint in two weeks - but it took several weeks before the results became obvious.

SEO is like Real Estate

In that sense, SEO is like investing in real estate…

Buying your first home feels like a massive leap. It takes serious research, planning, and effort to buy a home you love. It takes serious research and planning and effort to build an online revenue engine.

It’s mad frustrating early on. Things that you think will be simple end up being complicated. Even if you publish the perfect content, Google may wait weeks to rank it. And even if you publish the perfect content piece, you have to do it over and over.

But you keep chipping away, and suddenly you have this house that is worth so much more than it was when you started. You chip away at your SEO and content, suddenly you have a website that is always finding leads and generating sales for you. Without ad dollars.

The more you improve your property or expand the number of properties you own, the more income generated. Same with SEO content on your website, other websites, social media platforms, etc.

Other Marketing Channels

Traditional advertising is like paying rent or booking a hotel.

The benefits end as soon as you stop paying money.

It's possible to find a good deal with effort, but it's infinitely easier to waste your money with no effort.

The best part of SEO you can stop anytime but still enjoy the benefits. Sure, your organic traffic will eventually fall as your content gets outdated - but that’s a gradual process that happens over years.

For example, I wrote a series of blogs for a SaaS company in 2018 - 2019. One of those blogs generated 5-9 new customers every month for the next two years. Years later, that blog was still bringing in new customers every month - along with dozens of other pages we published during that time - without any extra investment.

Years after they are done paying me, those blogs still bring that client new customers every month.

The Richest SEO in Babylon

Publishing content and optimizing your pages could even be compared to buying dividend stocks. The pain and effort of buying more shares is greater than the dividend you get paid next month. A new landing page you publish this month will probably not pay for itself next month. But it does pay something most months. It pays in new customers.

And before long, you have dozens to hundreds of pages paying you something every month, which equates to a steady stream of customers you can rely on - without burning money on traditional advertising.
